Wargaming News, Miniatures articles on 18^th C North America, WW2 Operation Market Garden, Battle of Fredericksburg, Mexican-American War, Japanese 1870s Satsuma Rebellion, Middle Ages Ireland, British colonial wars, First Anglo-Afghan War, general gaming, miniatures and tournament articles.  Interview with founder of Citadel Miniatures and owner of Wargames Foundry.  As usual, tons of great pictures and interesting articles.

Civil War History Dec 2012 Vol 58 No 4

The Altoona conference and Emancipation, Black Northerners’ Debates over Enlistment in the American Civil War and book reviews.  I expect this to be of the usual high academic standard previous issues have been.

North & South Vol 14 No 4

I read some very poor reviews on this magazine dated about 3 years ago but an intriguing article drew me into buying this issue.  Good so far.  Articles by scholars, maybe a touch of pop history but at a higher level.  ACW news and trivia information.  Articles on Harper’s Ferry raid, Confederate strategy and its shortfalls, New Mexico campaign, Sioux uprising, court proceedings re: the Lincoln assassination conspirators, Stahel’s Cavalry Division. Good so far.

Usual news, ads, identification of militaria posed by readers, book reviews, auction news, article on identifying Reproduction DDR Parachute Service Badges.  Very quick read.

Modern Warfare #3 Jan-Feb 2013

Somali Pirates game and article.  Great details, photos and maps.  A What IF scenario on a 1967 Invasion of North Vietnam.  The USMC at An Nasiriyah March 2003.  Great maps and interesting photos.  An article on development of the X-15, designed to fly Mach 10 in the 1950s and 60s.  Stealth Technology and Unmanned Surface Vessels discussed.  Book reviews to close.

Purchased a few days go.
Various short essays on different periods of military history, including Korean women used as sex slaves during WW2 and the Falklands War.  An article on whether Custer could have won Little Big Horn, devastation in Jerusalem after the First Crusade, a comparison of Irish Rebellion methods to that of the Taliban and Vietcong, a look at Aaron Burr, a review of some of Cecil Beaton's WWII photographs, the Dreyse needle gun at the 1864 Battle of Lundby in Denmark, the US tradition of burying fallen service members abroad, and the search for Marine remains at the site of the August 17, 1942 Makin Raid in the Pacific.  Also, reviews of military history exhibits, books, etc.  

Articles aren't too long but are meant to question prevailing thought and provide new interpretations.  Good graphics and photos. 

World War II and FlyPast

World War II - January/February 2012
This issue touches on US knowledge of the Katyn Killings in Poland, an interview with the writer of Isaac's Army - a book on the Warsaw killings, articles on McGovern's WWII activity, Normandy today, Ridgway, Japanese subs, German wartime resistance to the Nazis, knick-knacks made by soldiers in theater, a King Neptune equator-crossing ceremony on a Naval ship, the German Heinkel He 111 medium bomber, book/DVD/exhibit reviews and a what if essay on what if the Omaha Beach landing had failed.

Good articles, intelligent but not too detailed.  A few personal recollection pieces.  Good illustrations and photos not often seen around.

FlyPast - December 2012
Includes a calendar for 2013.  
Aviation heritage news.  An article on WW2 fighter pilot Rupert Clerke, the "Vintage Pair", Arthur Aaron VC recipient, the use of Radio-Controlled glide bombs in support of the Normandy landings, flight of a restored de Havilland Mosquito, and a multiple article spotlight on the Lockheed Hudson.  An article on a 100 year old Blackburn Monoplane, the Shoreham airshow, “Action Stations”, Royal Naval Air Station Burscough, and restoration of a de Havilland Moth VH-ULM.

Loads of photos and lots of detailed articles.  This one will keep you busy for a while.

The Journal of Military History - Vol. 76, No. 4 October 2012
This arrived a couple weeks ago but just getting to it.  This issue is focused entirely on the War of 1812.  A number of academic articles in relation to the war address: Jefferson's national security policy, Army officers, Navy petty officers, the war's connection to the  Napoleonic wars, British Royal Navy activities, why the White House was burned, American Indians, privateering, wikipedia coverage of the war, Winfield Scott and a review of books with  Canadian perspectives of the war.  Also 70 some book reviews.

Packaging and magazine were good enough to take the minor beating the post office gave it and still look good as new.

November 29 Update: The Tobruk piece was interesting and informative.  However the highlights for me were the articles on the Battle of Shiloh, providing very good information on river crossing operations and logistics, and the pieces on the Battle of Fei River and the Sino-Vietnamese War.  Both Asian conflicts were well covered, providing general information from the strategic, operational and tactical levels.  Good reading and good maps.
